In many spiritual traditions, intuition has been a way to connect with a higher power or divine energy to gain insights and guidance to help navigate the ups and downs of life and to make the right choices.

Spirituality is a personal experience — It opens the door to believing in something greater than us, whether it be a higher power, the universe, or spiritual energy — A source of wisdom and guidance beyond our conscious being.

Spiritual intuition: The key to unlocking wisdom?

The belief is that in cultivating our spiritual intuition, we become more attuned to subtle energies and vibrations around us. We begin to see patterns and connections previously hidden, and we gain a greater sense of purpose and meaning in our lives. This leads us to a deeper sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment, as we align ourselves with our true nature and purpose.

Many see it as God working within us and some authors refer to this as intuition from a spiritual base. One such author is Florence Scovel Shinn.

Intuitive guidance for spiritual seekers

Florence Scovel Shinn offered spiritual guidance to many seeking help during distraught times. Shinn was an inspirational lecturer and author of the early 20th century, best known for her books “The Game of Life and How to Play It” and “Your Word is Your Wand,” which are still widely read and studied today.

Shinn claimed intuition is the voice of the divine within us that always guides us toward our highest good. Tapping into this source of infinite wisdom and power connects us to the things we desire.

Shinn used examples of people finding success from trusting their intuition, even when it goes against their rational minds or the opinions of others.

She saw intuition in spirituality, talked about spiritual law, and mingled passages from the bible throughout the content of her books.

Her teachings require a mindset change, a willingness to let go of preconceived notions and beliefs.

Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way.

She believed that the more you cultivate your intuition and learn to trust it, the more aligned you become with your true purpose and the more successful you become at “the game of life”.

She wrote how “words are like boomerangs” and how “saying the word” for what you want with active belief attracts into your life the right relationships and situations. Her books offer affirmations (or mantras) for reprogramming your subconscious mind — i.e. a mindset shift to bring about success.

You can develop your intuition through spiritual practices

Here are some spiritual practices for accessing your intuition:

  1. Pray.
Find a quiet space to pray to your spiritual guide. This could be a sacred space in your home or a peaceful outdoor location.
  2. Meditate.
Take deep breaths and focus on your intention to connect with your divine self. You may want to visualize a white light surrounding you and filling you with positive energy.
  3. Ask and you shall receive.
Put it out there to your higher self or spirit guide for guidance on a particular issue or question. You can do this silently or out loud, whatever feels most comfortable for you.
  4. Listen for Angel or Holy Spirit guidance.
These may come in the form of thoughts, feelings, or sensations in your body. Trust your inner wisdom and follow any guidance that feels right for you.
  5. Practice self-care and self-love.
Cultivate a deeper connection with your higher self or God. This may include activities such as yoga, journaling, or spending time in a spiritual place.
